Going the Extra Mile to Save Pets!
The SHS recently began a new transport program to help animals from our shelter find new homes through humane societies up North. We are partnering with reputable shelters where potential adopters outnumber available dogs and puppies.
Meet Kermit the Bus!
After hearing about this new program and learning that the SHS would have to spend money to rent a van for future transports, a generous SHS friend and supporter offered us the exclusive use of her Prevost motor coach.
The vehicle's teal green color lent itself to the nickname “Kermit,” which has stuck! Kermit the Bus has six bunk beds as well as a master bedroom, all of which have been slightly modified to securely hold crates and kennels. The bus offers enough space to comfortably transport up to 60 puppies and dogs.
Kermit's maiden voyage was on Wednesday, September 16th, to meet the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) half way between Spartanburg and Detroit. The first trip saw 45 dogs and puppies going to their new homes, and it was clear that there was space for more.
We are already discussing future possibilities with other groups, and with community support we hope to expand the program in the coming months.

From pre-trip veterinary check-ups, to staffing and gas for the trip, the costs for running a bus full of dogs for long distances can really add up!
But it is worth it.It's hard to put a price tag on a lifetime of love for a dog and the unyielding devotion the dog gives back. That's why the SHS staff is so committed to this and all of the SHS programs.
