Spay/Neuter Partnership

August 05, 2008 - Beginning August 1, 2008 the Spartanburg and Cherokee County Humane Societies have partnered to ensure that Cherokee County residents have access to the same low-income spay/neuter services as Spartanburg County pet owners.

For Cherokee County residents, the money to subsidize these surgeries will come from South Carolina's No More Homeless Pets program, funded by the sale of special spay/neuter vehicle license plates. The cost of sterilization for dogs and cats is only $15 (including microchip) for qualified pet owners whose pets are current on vaccination. Low cost vaccinations are available if needed.

To receive the discount, pet owners must confirm proof of eligibility by presenting at least one of the following: Food Stamps/EBT Card, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Medicaid/Medicare Card, or proof of low income.

"We want to reduce the number of unwanted pets entering animal shelters and the Humane Society of Cherokee County (HSCC) wants to make sure that financial limitations do not prevent any pet owner from spaying or neutering their pets," says Judy Wyles, HSCC Board Treasurer. "Aggressive and affordable sterilization programs have proven to be the most effective way to eliminate unwanted litters of pets over time. Other communities who have mobilized aggressive spay/neuter efforts have seen a significant decrease in the number of animals euthanized each year in their communities." she adds.

Spartanburg Humane Society (SHS) President and CEO Sandy Christiansen agrees and adds, "spaying and neutering also leads to healthier and happier pets. It is better for them, better for you, and better for the community. The Spartanburg Humane Society takes every opportunity to help pet owners make sure their dogs and cats are sterilized. We are happy to be able to help Cherokee County pet owners by making these services so affordable for them as well."

Interested pet owners can leave a message at a local Gaffney number, 864-487-4757, with their name and a telephone number where they can be reached and a SHS staff member will call them back within 24 hours. The SHS clinic can be reached directly by calling (864) 583-4805, ext. 115. More information about the benefits of spay/neuter can be seen by visiting our veterinary clinic pages here.

The Spartanburg Humane Society's everyday prices are the lowest in the upstate. Pet owners who are not eligible for the low-income discount still pay only $25 for male cats, $40 for female cats, $50 for male dogs and $55 for female dogs. These prices also include free microchip identification.
