The Spartanburg Humane Society (SHS) has designated 2010 "The Year of the Cat," in order to raise awareness about America's most popular pet. Throughout the year the SHS will honor felines with special programs and services aimed at improving the welfare of cats in Spartanburg County. Certified cat lovers, cat "feeders," and even determined dog lovers, are all invited to join the celebration.
In February, communities nationwide recognize "Prevent a Litter" month. Spartanburg is focusing on preventing kitty litters not only in February, but all year long. To kick off the Year of the Cat, the SHS is hosting a neuterathon on February 27, with a goal of neutering 250 cats in one day! The SHS and Upstate Neuter Team are partnering to neuter male cats as young as 8 weeks old for just $6.00. This price also includes microchip identification
"Aggressive spay/neuter efforts in Spartanburg County have resulted in a significant decrease of unwanted puppies, but the same is not true for unwanted litters of kittens," SHS President and CEO Sandy Christiansen said. "Our goal is to shed light on this serious, but preventable, problem and to let community members know how they can become a part of the solution. Taking advantage of the neuterathon is an excellent step forward."
The neuterathon is by appointment only. Male kitten and cat owners can call the SHS Veterinary Clinic at 864-583-4805 ext. 115 to schedule their cat for surgery or register online. All cats who come to the neuterathon must be in carriers and up-to-date on their rabies and feline distemper (FVRCP) vaccines. These vaccines may be purchased at the neuterathon for an additional $5 each
The Spartanburg Humane Society is declaring 2010 the Year of the Cat in order to reverse the fortune of felines in this community. While kittens and cats are over-represented in the annual number of animals who are brought to the shelter, they are significantly under-represented in nearly all of the life saving services offered by the SHS, from spay/neuter to adoption. During the yearlong celebration, community members will have many opportunities to partner with the SHS to take positive actions on behalf of cats.
The Spartanburg Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide quality care to lost and unwanted pets while raising community awareness about issues affecting companion animals. In addition to providing shelter and care to thousands of animals in need each year, the SHS offers programs and services aimed at creating a safer and healthier community for pets and people. These programs include low cost veterinary services, dynamic humane education programs, and dog training and pet behavior consultation.
