Volunteering at the Spartanburg Humane Society
The work that the SHS accomplishes would not be possible without the generous contributions of our volunteers. Every day, a volunteer helps to improve the life of an animal at the Spartanburg Humane Society.
Take a moment to view our slideshow thanking our volunteers for National Volunteer Appreciation Week.
By joining our team, you will help us provide lifesaving services and meaningful programs to pets and people throughout our community.
Quick Facts About Becoming an SHS Volunteer
- The SHS volunteer program welcomes adults 17 years and older
- The first step to becoming an SHS volunteer is to complete an online volunteer application. If you prefer, you can download a pdf of the application and mail or fax it in
- The next step is to attend a volunteer orientation where you will learn about the SHS and all the ways you can help animals
- The final step is to complete specific training for individual volunteer opportunities
- After completing these steps, you are welcome to volunteer whenever your schedule allows!
How You Can Help
There are countless ways. . .
Walking dogs, comforting cats, bathing puppies, assisting in dog obedience classes, helping our clinic staff at low cost vaccine clinics, taking pictures, stuffing envelopes, visiting schools with our Humane Education Coordinator, landscaping to keep our grounds attractive and inviting, helping to raise awareness and support at special events. . . the list goes on and on.
If you love animals, and want to share your times and talents to help us better serve them, then the SHS has a volunteer opportunity just right for you! View our volunteer opportunities.
Animal Assisted Therapy through the SHS
Volunteers with our Animal Assisted Therapy (AAT) program take their registered therapy pets to visit with residents of long term care and medical facilities. Animal assisted activities also include visiting schools and participating in special events and outreach programs.
As a registered AAT team, you and your pet serve as ambassadors, sharing the joy of pet ownership with those who cannot experience it, and demonstrating for all, the richness and possibility of the human-animal bond. Learn more about AAT here.
If you can’t come in to the shelter, but want to help the animals, here are a few additional ideas:
- Save and donate newspapers for use in our cages
- Donate/collect items from our Wish List
- Spread the word about programs and services at the SHS
- Ask for donations to the SHS in lieu of birthday gifts
- Make a financial donation
- Donate/collect safe toys for SHS animals
Or do something we haven't thought of. . .The sky is limit!
