Humane Education at the Spartanburg Humane Society
Educating our community about homeless animals, solutions to pet overpopulation, respect for animals and responsible pet care is an important part of our core mission at the SHS.
RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS
Innovative Humane Education Programs for the Classroom!
Our Humane Education Department provides animal related, grade-specific programs that are designed to meet South Carolina learning standards. Each presentation includes hands-on learning activities and follow-up exercises. Service Learning Projects
Teachers interested in service learning projects can contact our Humane Education Department for projects that connect school-based curriculum with the inherent caring and concern young people have for their community and pet companions. The results are memorable lessons that seek to foster a stronger, more humane society for us all.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHILDREN
Kids Who Care - A New Afterschool Program at the Spartanburg Humane Society
Through this new program, the SHS offers sessions for two grade divisions: 3rd – 5th and 6th – 8th. Participants meet once a week for six weeks. Learn more about this unique program.
Camp Love a Pet and Mini Camp
Camp Love-A-Pet is a popular summer day camp held at the Spartanburg Humane Society for children entering grades 5-7. In 2008 we introduced a new program for younger pet lovers in grades 3 & 4.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY
Shelter Tours
Educational tours are available by appointment. Tours provide a wonderful way to learn more about the humane society, why animals are here, and how we care for them. For younger students we concentrate on reading, critical thinking, counting, and following directions.
Tours for youth and adult groups may be scheduled during the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. All age groups are welcome.
Speakers Bureau
Invite us to speak to your community group! We love telling people about the mission and programs of the Spartanburg Humane Society.
Volunteer with the Humane Education Department!
Would you like to help the SHS inform audiences (from preschoolers to adults) about our services and heighten awareness of ways our community can help animals? Our education programs emphasize responsible pet care, pet overpopulation issues and compassion. They are enhanced with the support of volunteers.
