First Trip North Helps 45 Dogs!

Going the extra mile to save pets!

September 18, 2009 - Abe - SHS Alum (via Michigan)! In the most recent edition of our newsletter, The Scoop, you can read about an exciting new program at the SHS that will help more deserving animals find homes. We are organizing transports to reputable humane societies up North, where potential adopters outnumber available dogs, especially puppies!

Our first "transport" occurred in June.  Staff from the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) travelled over 11 hours to pick up 29 puppies and dogs.  Not surprisingly, adopters from Michigan and as far away as New Jersey loved our critters!

An amazing friend of the SHS offered us the exclusive use of her Prevost bus, so that we would be able to meet partner humane societies half way, without the expense of renting a vehicle. The bus, nicknamed "Kermit," offers enough space to comfortably transport up to 60 animals at a time.

Kermit's maiden voyage was on Wednesday, September 16th.  Four SHS staff members and 45 puppies and dogs travelled to Kentucky, where we were met by staff and volunteers of the MHS.  All were astounded by the cuteness of our critters.

We are already discussing future possibilities with other groups. We hope to expand the program in the coming months, but will need additional community support to make it happen.  Just the fuel for our next trip will cost about $400.
