Congratulations! You've made the lifesaving decision to adopt your next pet from the Spartanburg Humane Society. We are eager to help you find your next best friend.
At the SHS we have cats, kittens, puppies and dogs of all ages and sizes, so you are sure to find a pal who matches your lifestyle. And if you have a particular breed in mind, remember that nearly 25% of dogs entering shelters like the SHS are purebred.
We also care for small and furry critters like rabbits and guinea pigs and large animals like horses who are looking for a new home. Visit us regularly to find your perfect match!
Take a moment to learn more details about our adoption process below! If you have a question, please feel free to contact us.
Visit SHS and get to know an animal who is available for adoption. We have get acquainted rooms and a fenced area outside where you can spend some time with the pet of your choice.
Complete a short adoption application. This paperwork includes a few simple questions, and requires proof of identity and veterinary references. This is simply to protect the health of adopted animals as well as any pets you already have at home.
Have a counseling session with a member of our staff who will explain all the benefits of adopting from the SHS. You can ask your counselor any questions about our post adoption veterinary services, dog training services, and anything else you might wish to know.
Sign an adoption contract and pay the adoption fee, which helps to offset the cost of the services provided to you and your new pet.
If unaltered, we will schedule your pet for the first available surgery time to get spayed or neutered in our veterinary clinic.
Take your new best friend home!

Many people think the Spartanburg Humane Society only handles dogs and cats but that isn't the case. In the last two years we have provided shelter and care to over 1,000 animals of other species.
Rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, ferrets, reptiles, birds or even fish -- we are here for every animal who needs us. If you are looking for a pet like this, we hope you will agree that adoption is the only option!

From time to time, large animal and farm animal species, including horses, goats, cows and pigs also need the help of the Spartanburg Humane Society.
The procedures may be a little different, but the mission is the same -- just like dogs, cats, and smaller critters, these animals also deserve a second chance.
