The Spartanburg Humane Society (SHS) has extended its sale on feline spay and neuter surgeries thanks to a second $71,000 grant from PetSmart Charities®. The grant will allow an additional 2,011 Spartanburg cats and kittens as young as 8 weeks old to be spayed or neutered at the SHS Veterinary Clinic for just $15 (or $5 for low income residents).
Last year's PetSmart Charities grant allowed the SHS to spay and neuter 2,010 cats for the reduced price of $15 (or $5), an increase of more than 1,000 surgeries over the previous year. Given the average size of a litter, the SHS clinic prevented as many as 10,000 additional cats in our community. Given past experiences, many of these cats would have become homeless, abused, or neglected.
"In 2010, Spartanburg stepped up for cats in our community," President and CEO Sandy Christiansen said. "With the help of PetSmart Charities, we are challenging Spartanburg to continue the momentum. By removing the financial barriers for feline spay and neuter surgeries for a second year, we are hoping to move closer to a future with significantly less cats in need."
Spartanburg County residents who wish to have their cat spayed or neutered can schedule an appointment online at www.spartanburghumane.org/helpcats or by calling the SHS Veterinary Clinic at 864.583.4805, ext.115.
"The Spartanburg Humane Society's discounted prices on feline spay and neuter surgeries program is a great example of taking the initiative to improve the local community," said Susana Della Maddalena, vice president and executive director of PetSmart Charities, Inc. "Targeted programs like these are the key to successful, low-cost spay/neuter in local communities. Cumulatively, they are making a huge impact on pet overpopulation nationwide."
The Spartanburg Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to provide quality care to lost and unwanted pets while raising community awareness about issues affecting companion animals. In addition to providing shelter and care to thousands of animals in need each year, the SHS offers programs and services aimed at creating a safer and healthier community for pets and people. These programs include low cost veterinary services, dynamic humane education programs, anti-cruelty initiatives, and dog training and pet behavior consultation.
