The recession has hit everyone hard - and even pets sometimes pay the price. As part of its mission to support pets and people, for the month of June the Spartanburg Humane Society (SHS) Veterinary Clinic is offering spay and neuter surgery for just $10 to qualifying low-income households. Also in June, the SHS is extending this price to community members who have lost their jobs and can provide proof of unemployment.
"In tough economic times, pet owners may be tempted to put off or avoid the cost of surgery," said Sandy Christiansen, President and CEO of the Spartanburg Humane Society. "In fact, waiting to spay or neuter your pet is often a more costly decision. Food and care for unexpected litters, medical problems associated with pregnancy or giving birth, and serious health problems including ovarian or testicular cancer are just a few very real and very expensive consequences for pets who can still reproduce."
Anyone receiving benefits from food stamps/EBT card, Medicaid/Medicare, Social Security, Disability, and/or Unemployment is eligible to spay or neuter their pet for $10 at the SHS Veterinary Clinic. Individuals may also show proof of low income (according to Federal Guidelines that are listed on the SHS website) from their most recent tax statement or pay stub.
The SHS is now providing discounted veterinary care to qualifying low-income pet owners for their pets" general health care needs. An appointment can be made at the SHS Veterinary Clinic for a very low $10 exam fee. Additional services, such as vaccinations, testing for parasites, and access to affordable products like heartworm prevention, and more, are available.
Pet owners who do not qualify for the low income discount may still have their pet spayed or neutered for some of the lowest prices in the Upstate. Regular prices at the SHS Veterinary Clinic are $55 for female dogs, $50 for male dogs, $40 for female cats, and $25 for male cats.
